Redefining Womanhood Beyond Roles

Let’s talk about something that often gets lost in translation: the phrase "Eshet chayil," which means "woman of valor." Too often, society—and yes, sometimes even our beloved church—tries to box us women into neat little categories, defined by what we do rather than who we are. But here’s the twist: being a woman of valor isn’t about ticking off a list of achievements. It’s about how we live our lives, with integrity, love, and a sprinkle of grit.

"Eshet chayil, woman of valor, isn’t about what you do, but how you do it. If you are a stay-at-home mom, Eshet chayil. If you are an executive at a corporation, Eshet chayil. If you are struggling to make ends meet, Eshet chayil. The worth of a woman cannot be measured by what she does, but by who she is in the eyes of God." Rachel Held Evans hit the nail on the head with this one. She captured the essence of what it means to truly embody valor in every aspect of our lives.

The Heart of the Matter

In Proverbs 31, the woman of valor is celebrated for her diligence, wisdom, and kindness. She’s not confined to a single role but is multilayered and complex, just like us. Whether you’re juggling kids and laundry or leading boardroom meetings (or both!), your worth isn’t measured by the cleanliness of your home or salary. It’s about the heart you bring to your daily grind.

More Than Roles

I find this concept to be profoundly liberating. God sees beyond our societal roles and values us for our hearts and character. It's a reminder that we’re loved unconditionally, not for our accomplishments but for who we are. This connection to something greater than ourselves can be a balm for our mental health, especially when we’re feeling overwhelmed or undervalued.

Embracing the "Eshet chayil" mindset can also foster a more supportive community, within our families, social circles, workplaces, and churches. When we recognize the valor in each woman’s unique journey, we break down the barriers that divide us. Stay-at-home moms, corporate leaders, and everyone in between—all are worthy of honor and respect. This inclusivity can transform our society, creating spaces where every woman feels seen and valued.

Encouragement for the Journey

So, how do we live this out? First, give yourself grace. Remember, your worth isn’t a reflection of your to-do list or how others may perceive you. Second, celebrate the small victories. Each act of kindness, each moment of integrity, contributes to your valor. And finally, uplift other women. Acknowledge their strength and boldness, creating a ripple effect of encouragement and support.

Embracing your inner “Eshet chayil” means living with purpose and passion, regardless of your circumstances. It’s a powerful reminder that you are enough, just as you are. So, whether you’re managing a household, climbing the corporate ladder, or simply trying to make it through the day, take heart. You are a woman of valor, cherished by God, and an inspiration to those around you.

Feel free to share this message with the women in your life, reminding them—and yourself—that our worth goes way beyond the roles we play. Here's to living boldly and embracing our divine valor every single day.

A Woman of Valor

An excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous], who is he who can find her? Her value is more precious than jewels and her worth is far above rubies or pearls.” - Proverbs 31:10 AMP
